Localvore on the Loose

One way to "slow your roll" is to eat locally. You decrease your dependence on gasoline, and you help your local businessmen/farmers/etc. Plus you reap the benefits of much fresher products since you're so close to the source. Try it out. You just might like being a localvore.

A local Thanksgiving?

One of the best things we can do to "slow our roll" and to take care of our environment is to eat locally. Visit a farmer's market; look for items at your grocery store that are locally produced, go to those smaller stores; you get the picture. Local helps us in a variety of different ways. It helps build better communities, because we're encouraging local businesses. We're keeping it local. It cuts down on gasoline usage and a variety of other resource waste. Local items often taste better, because we get them while they're freshest.

The list goes on and on. So, look into it. See what you can do to become a localvore. It's fun too.

Funny-but sad in its truthfullness

Slowing Down?

Well, obviously I haven't done very well with the slowing down thing. I appear to be too busy to even update this blog. Actually, I'm just a "tad" bit distractable. Okay, I'm highly distractable.

I'm working on the slowing down thing, but I'm not very good at it. We DID limit the boys to one sport each per season. Since all of the boys chose year round swimming, they will all be heading to the same place all year. I got seriously lucky since they could've all chosen different sports each season. I think the sport thing has slowed us a little, though my husband doesn't agree. He thinks it takes way too much of our time. He doesn't have a clue as to how horrible it could be.

In addition to swimming, the boys are doing Scouts. That is the same night at the same time for all of them-serious blessing. I stood strong and am NOT den leader. I actually get to breath during that time and have even been known to head to the store a time or two for some solitary grocery shopping-Food Lion is across the street from Scouts.

I did NOT fight the PTO monster, so I've somehow ended up as the PTO president this year. That did not help us slow our ride and head toward a slower lifestyle. I know better now though and am currently working on my "speech" for the next time someone asks me to do something like this.

We're working on "slower eating" which involves a lot more cooking at home. I am not a very good cook, so this takes considerable effort on my part. Parker even thanked me for not burning dinner the other night. Ummmm...does that mean I make a habit of burning dinner? As I said this goal is hard for me, but my family is worth it. I can't know what's in that crap they serve at fast food restaurants and feed it to my family in good conscience. Giving up sodas is still a work in process, but I have a really cool stainless steel waterbottle.

Well, it's time to head back to work. Hopefully, I slow down again and update this blog soon.

Slow the Ride-I Want Off

I'm starting this blog, because I want to explore a slower life. I'd like to document that search on this spot. Our family is living so much faster than I want to live. Our world is living faster than our earth can stand, and I don't want to be a part of it. I'm a special education teacher, and I feel like our push, push, push lifestyle has made it impossible for me to do the job I thought I was doing. I wonder if children even learn anything of value anymore. I wonder if we're really teaching them to read and write-to think-or if we're just teaching them to go faster, faster, faster.

I don't like the fast food, fast travel, fast living, and I don't want to keep up with the Joneses anymore. I want my family to live slower, to know where their food comes from, to live a simple life and really take time to enjoy the world we've been given.

I'm just starting this journey, and ironically enough, my husband is hurrying me to get off of the computer. I guess slow will have to come tomorrow.
